Polymer-silicate as impregnation
The Kobosil impregnation produced by BL Berend Lohmüller GmbH is a combination product composed of an aqueous silicate and an acrylate dispersion of fi ne particles.
Because of this composition the product provides a permanent protection of concrete surfaces and degrades effl orescence at the same time. Further advantages of the
product are the ease to apply as well as the moderate investment costs.
The combination of these two active substances is the reason for the unique properties of Kobosil. In this process, hardening of the material after having been applied is achieved through two mechanisms: owing to the reaction with the concrete a silica gel is created, complemented by a fi lm formation of the acrylate dispersion. The formation of silica gel reduces the porosity of the concrete, and the mechanical and chemical resistance of the base is increased. This is a durable mechanism.
An additional positive effect is the fact that the reaction of the silicate degrades effl orescence. The fi lm formation by means of acrylate is similar to a coat of varnish and creates an additional protective effect.
The Kobosil impregnation for concrete slabs (wet-cast slabs) is to be understood as a so-called mounting and laying protection for such products. The impregnation reduces the susceptibility to soiling as well as the effl orescence proneness, up to the entire prevention of effl orescence.
All this may result in a signifi cant reduction of complaints. The impregnation is easy to apply inline at the dry side by means of a spraying unit, thus there is no loss in cycle time. As the setting time of just some seconds is quite short, the impregnated products may be packetized immediately.
An immediate packaging with shrink foil is also possible without any problems. Although it is an acrylic coating, UV curing is not necessary. Low investment costs may degrade effl orescence and/ or even prevent them partially by the application of Kobosil, without any impact on the concrete surface. The decisive advantage for manufacturers of concrete products is, however, the decline in complaints, which might result in considerable cost savings.
